More Kamera Karma [Nov. 7th, 2009|01:38 am]

[poindexter]

$4.99 at my local thrift store - this is a Leica Z2X, a KILLER 35mm point and shoot camera. This is my first Leica, I'm curious to see if the lens (a 35-70 Vario-Elmar) lives up to Leica's reputation.

Hi, thriftwhores!  This post is a follow-up to this post right here in which I posted a few pictures of 1963 high school yearbook I got at an estate sale.  I decided to go back through the whole thing and post some of the highlights.  And so, without further ado...

Since I've been sick I haven't really done a proper thrifting trip. I mean, on days I felt better I would go to one, maybe two of the stores closest to my house but today I was feeling good, the weather was nice and I even bothered to eat a proper breakfast. So I made the trip to all my favorite thrift stores (even the ones in Norfolk!). Few but large images.

for the first time in my livejournal history i skipped a whole month without posting! bummer dudes.

the usual: i've been busy, stressed out of my mind, but loving every second.

my life goes like this:
take hold church
school/homework
sleep as much as possible [which isn't much and which is usually why i'm cranky]

no time for etsy or knitting. sad times, i know.

highlights of late:
-unified underground - amazing trip with take hold. it brought us together and fired us up as a church.
-halloween - fun fun fun. almost peed my pants from so much laughter at scaring people.
-preparing for take hold fest. its amazing how God orchestrates things. money has come in, convinced the owner of the venue to put on a free show, bands are playing that haven't played there since skelletones. we want to heal wounds in the scene and only glorify God that night. so excited for that night. remember us in prayer, please.

i know there is more but i can't think. these semester is nuts. this past week i was losing it a bit. the weather and overwhelmingness of emotions and all the committments i have on my plate. it can be super tough and feels like a battle at times.

i'm doing well, though.

Thrift Score of My Life [Nov. 2nd, 2009|07:27 pm]

Alright, so people post pictures of clothing they buy at thrift stores then link to ebay or retail where it's going for a lot more, so I hope this is alright. I am not reselling here, I probably will eventually because I am a college student, I just want to brag about my sweet score!

At a Salvation Army saw this beauty for $75, and knowing the little bit I do about instruments I thought hey, maybe this is worth more. So I did some quick iphone research, and called my gear-nerd boyfriend. We determined that it could potentially be worth a lot more, and at worst I'd break even or a friend would get an awesome Christmas present. So I abandoned my cheap nature at the door and bought this:

What is it?  )

the fall is a dangerous season for me; despite how many coats I have, I always gravitate towards those racks time and time again. but it is also my favorite time to thrift..used holiday ware, musty scarves, beautiful leaves falling at the flea market. goofy girl wearing pumpkin headband.

Interview with Patrick [Oct. 31st, 2009|03:26 pm]

[death_in_albion]
I'm doing an interview with Patrick and since we're all tired of reading the same questions and answers over and over again I decided it was a good idea to create something out of his fans curiosities.

It's going to happen next week for the website Made-Up Disease. I'll try to film it so you guys can see the complete version of it and not only the edited article.

Obviously I'll have to make a selection of the questions and try to fit them on the interview which will be focused on his new release. But I'll do my best.

If you haven't had the chance to check out the Goodwill Outlets (aka The Bins), then I highly recommend it. It does take some effort and stamina but well worth it. Here is a collage of what I got this week........Vintage lapel pins, Ann Taylor Loft wallet in yellow, vintage baby blue serving bowl, vintage issue for wedding planning, small metal container for First Aid kits, amazing jewelry box, fancy faceplate, assortment of cute cards & envelopes, small needlepoint bird picture, great knitting bag complete with compartments and a measuring tape along the bottom; HUGE poster of Paris, PINK brand vintage-style purse (found at Village Merchant for $3). The other stuff all came to about $8 all together.

New single = Damaris [Oct. 30th, 2009|02:03 pm]

[mood | excited]

...via the mailing list. There's more info than this, quite a lot actually so if you want it all join the mailing list or the wolfboard, I didn't want to make a ginormous post here.

New single DAMARIS coming December 14th!

Yes, that's right - Patrick will be releasing Damaris as his next single on December 14th! Please note the correct date for this release, as some blogs and newsfeeds have reporting the 15th and this isn't the case. Now! Onto those juicy details we know you love (we do too, goss-fiends that we are). Read on for info on the single itself, including how the song came to be written and in what formats you can grab it, bits and pieces about the b-sides and upcoming video, and some stuff on what Patrick's up to now and next...

God damned Damaris, killed with last kiss...

Patrick will be releasing this powerful and beautiful ballad that has been an international stand-out live anthem, performed over countless music festivals this summer. The song is semi-autobiographical and centred on the loss of love, but was also inspired by a tale discovered by Patrick when he went to seek out his English roots after a period of heartbreak and the ending of a relationship that was documented in the song The Magic Position.

Tracing the roots of his father under the family name Apps back to a family of ferret-catchers and blacksmiths in Brede, East Sussex, Patrick stumbled across a small wooden cross engraved with the name 'Damaris' among the gravestones of his ancestors...

From that moment, Patrick began to research who Damaris might be, and it came about that the wooden cross told a larger tale than anyone could have imagined. It is still unsure whether Damaris was a gypsy or a heathen, but she belonged outside of the Catholic church, who in 1880, held a very strict reign over romance and passion in such a small village. Damaris was most certainly not from the Catholic church, so when she fell in love with Lewis, the son of the Parish priest, she was denied of ever being united in marriage with him.

Patrick writes the song from the perspective of Lewis after discovering that Damaris has 'died of a broken heart', which, in the 19th Century was a polite term for either suicide, or a romantic notion that someone can be so heartbroken that they give up on life. The song is a musical iconisation of a true life Romeo and Juliet from Sussex. Two star-crossed lovers who were destined to be together, but were denied, due to the repression and sign of the times.

The church organ on the song, played by Patrick and the drums by Marcello Vig were both recorded in 2008 on location in St. George's Church, the very church ground where the romance took place a hundred years before between Damaris and Lewis.

B-sides:
* Peacock Skies - programmed by Patrick during the Magic Position tour of 2007 in the Californian Desert somewhere between Las Vegas and San Francisco.
* Damaris (St. George's Church Acoustic Mix) - a special acoustic mix of Damaris, which highlights the amazing St. George's Church Organ and Patrick Wolf/Fiona Brice string arrangements in their full glory.
* Queen Isabella (The She-Wolf of France) - a truly gothic baroque harpsichord-driven fury of a song, written from the perspective of the legendary 'She-Wolf of France'. Isabella of France who was sworn into a marriage in her youth with King Edward the Second of England, who was reputed to be bisexual... The English people in the 16th Century branded her 'She Wolf'. Legend has it that her ghost still haunts the gardens of St. Paul's Cathedral, nearby to where Patrick lives.

The video:
The video was directed by Patrick in collaboration with Director of Photography Rory Broadfoot. Patrick co-stars alongside the actress Gwendoline Christie, who can currently be seen playing Holly Go Lightly's glamorous neighbour in the hit West End production of Breakfast at Tiffany's, and also in the Terry Gilliam film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The video is Patrick's visual interpretation of the passionate romance between Damaris and Lewis, shot on location at Blackdown, West Sussex. You'll be able to clap your peepers on it sometime in November.

new life to a mirror that had potential! [Oct. 30th, 2009|10:10 am]

[pink]
So I found this awesome mirror at the thrift store, here is a before shot of the color (I actually took the shot after of the back of the mirror
because I didn't take a before shot) I gave it a new color because it looked gross with the ugly brown it had. It had potential.. so now it's a glossy plum. YUM.

ALSO! I have a favor of all thrifters (If this is illegal to post then I will delete this section)
I recently bought my boyfriend a circuit bent speak and spell..
I know these toys are all over the thrift stores (un-bent) so this is why I come to you.. I am in search of the back to the battery compartment!
If anyone runs into a speak and spell for cheap (0-5 dollars) and is up for shipping it to me that'd be awesome and a big help.

Keep on thriftin

CDs, the only thing I've bought from the thrift store recently. :D Yay Veruca Salt! And the Sugar Ray one is new & still wrapped in plastic. I don't remember if any of these were half off since I bought all but the Anthrax one about 4 weeks ago.

Oh yeah, I also got the book "A Man Named Dave" for like $1.60 (it was half off).
